Why You Should Be Excited For Tell Me Why

Narrative driven episodic games are my guilty pleasure. Do I wish they’d just release in one go? Yes. Do I often wish for more meaningful choices and outcomes? Double yes! Do I love every single one I play anyway? You can see where this is going. I’ve not seen much buzz around DONTNOD Entertainment’s upcoming game Tell Me Why. It is being released amongst a lot of other big titles from Xbox Games Studios, so it understandably may have been overlooked. It is releasing in the same two-week period as Battletoads, Microsoft Flight Simulator and Wasteland 3! But I think DONTNOD’s upcoming adventure deserves it’s time in the spotlight too. Here’s why you should be excited for Tell Me Why!

Who Are DONTNOD Entertainment?

DONTNOD are the team behind the critically acclaimed Life Is Strange series, as well as action RPG Vampyr. They’ve won many awards for their work, and are known for their excellent storytelling.

What Is Tell Me Why?

Tell Me Why is an upcoming narrative driven, character focused adventure from DONTNOD Entertainment. Set in the fictional town of Delos Crossing, you will follow the story of reunited twins Tyler and Alyson Ronan. These twins have a special bond with which they’ll unravel the memories of their loving but troubled childhood. Along their journey, you will meet a cast of intriguing, true-to-life characters. As you interact with them, you will make choices that determine the strength of the unique bond that Tyler and Alyson share and shape their futures.

Why Should I Play It?

Episodes Release Weekly

There are a few reasons that I think you should play Tell Me Why when the first episode launches next week. Firstly, it’s worth mentioning that this episodic format will not be dragged out for months. Trust me, I’ve been there. I waited for each episode of Telltale’s The Walking Dead series. Sometimes, it felt like an eternity that would never end. Luckily, DONTNOD have already disclosed the dates each episode will release. The first episode will launch on August 26th, the second on September 3rd and the final episode will release September 10th. So you’ll never be waiting longer than a week! You’ll just be able to enjoy the title in short bites, just like your favorite TV series. Cool!

The Supernatural Bond

The ‘Bond’ between the twins is also something I’m excited for. It’s a supernatural link between the Ronan twins that allows them to revisit their memories. We’ll be using the Bond to find out the truth about their mother’s death. The choices you make using the bond will affect the twin’s relationship, for better or for worse. This bond is a unique way to show the past without relying on constant flashbacks that we just have to watch. Hopefully, we’ll get to make choices about how we use the Bond which will bring the twins closer together, or perhaps further apart. Digging for information is sure to cause lots of drama, and a supernatural power can only add to that!

Partnering With Xbox Games Studios

DONTNOD worked with Xbox Games Studios directly to publish this title, which gives me even more hope. Usually these games don’t have a large budget, relying on the sales of each episode to fund the next. Thanks to Xbox publishing the title, I’m confident we will see a fully fledged episodic narrative adventure, with plenty of depth. I’m excited to see DONTNOD fully realise their vision with Microsoft’s backing, and you should be too.
