Werewolves, vampires, mages… the World of Darkness is a rich tapestry of RPG goodness that is ideal for video adaptation. Vampire the Masquerade certainly has it’s passionate fans! This week, Cyanide Studios are looking to bring players into another part of the WoD that’s less explored. Here’s our full Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood preview to help explain everything you need to know!
What is Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood?
If you’re a fan of single-player action-RPGs that are teeming with werewolves and soaked in gore then Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood (wow we really need to find a shorter name for this game) might just be for you! Do you like action-packed trailers with heavy metal soundtracks? Then this trailer is definitely for you!
I’m sure swapping between the werewolf and human form is going to be a lot of fun. There are 3 forms that the protagonist, Cahal, can use in total: human (for interacting with other characters), wolf (for sneaking towards them) and, of course, werewolf (for absolutely obliterating them). Using stealth to sneak towards a group of enemies is nice, but bounding towards them as a big, bloodthirsty beast is better. We’ll have to wait until launch to get our hands on the game, but for now let’s dive into the story. That’s right, even games about werewolf carnage have stories these days – I love how the industry has evolved.
The Lone Werewolf
Cahal is a 50 year old werewolf who has dedicated his life to serving Gaia – Mother Earth. He was part of the Fianna Tribe, but was forced to leave five years ago after a devastating family tragedy. The game begins after a series of events lead Cahal to search for the remaining members of his pack. More importantly, Cahal must protect them from the evil Endron.
Endron are a multinational energy corporation that intends to destroy all life to serve the Wyrm, a corrupting entity and the main enemy of the werewolves. You can hear more about the story, the inspiration behind the game and some more details on the gameplay in this video.
The core of any good action game is the combat. Whether it feels good or not is something we’ll discover later this week, but it certainly looks brutal. I’m eager to see how the levels are designed – will they be made with combat in mind, or focused more on stealth? In the video above, the developers share their intention to let the player choose which approach they prefer, which is hopefully well-represented in the level design!
