Warhammer 40K – Darktide Reveal

Trailer Details

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is here to get you to fight for the Emperor and save the Imperium. We begin with four Imperial Guard, the army of mankind in this universe, moving through an eerie, mechanical structure. Clearing corners and hallways, our band of humans come across this wave of undead creatures, sporting a massive tank of a man right in the middle. Speculation is that it’s an undead Ogryn, which are gene enhanced humans. Above all, the most appealing thing is the technology in Warhammer 40k. As a result, we can expect so many cool weapons and gadgets. Besides your imperial carbines, that bright blue gun is a plasma rifle. It can disintegrate life with one round and punch clean through a heavily armored vehicle.

There is an audio transmission being played as our band of soldiers explore this structure. It sounds like a report from the Inquisition as they detail how bad the planet is. The Inquisition is a very powerful arm of the Imperium, even having 3 of its own military units. Daemons, Heretics, and Aliens are its main targets. The Inquisition created a military unit to deal with each group. Ordo Malleus deals with the manifestation of daemons, Ordo Xenos counters any alien species they consider a threat, and Ordo Hereticus battles traitors and psykers/witches.

Squad Dynamic

A 4 person squad is very uncommon for any troop by Imperial standards, therefore we can come to believe that these are survivors. Consequently, I don’t think we can expect any bigger squads than 4. Having multiple bands of Imperial Guard battling for survival sounds very exciting. Having the challenge of working or saving another squad and vice versa, above all, sounds like an exciting online experience. 10 player lobbies vying for weapons and comrades in a Chaos infested structure sounds like an amazing concept. However, a 4 person squad that can individually specialize in a certain manner to help the others i.e. assault, medic, support.

Breakdown

Seems like there are heretics and chaos about, which is the main enemy for the Inquisition. Inquisition is the anti -Chaos group of the Imperium, humanity, and the Imperium is led by The Emperor. Orks, Chaos, Eldar, Tau, Necrons, are some of your main races in Warhammer 40k lore. In this scene, Nurgle the God of pestilence, has corrupted the local population. Tertium is the Hive City where Darktide is to take place, a massive inductrial city that ascends to the clouds. Amazing trailer, detail and sound affects were top notch from the transmission to the metal piping of the ship. I expect to play as the inquisition, given the voice over and this setting being their call sign. I wouldn’t expect to play as a lowly imperial guard the whole time either.

Expectations

Finally, we come to say what we are expecting from Darktide. Story, grit, and and hybrid combat. Survival games like these can get repetitive quickly due to limited creativity and depth, counter to what this game has all the makings of a great co-op campaign that could feature different races and vehicles as well. The underlying gem could be a massive level development/upgrade tree, weapons, weapons and weapons. We are talking about bolter rifles, frag grenades, plasma rifles, melta guns, chainswords and chain-axes, even special abilities. The bosses could present some incredible and memorable duels. Grotesque, horror filled creatures or daemons could stand between you and freedom and you better believe it wont be an easy fight.
