The Medium Preview – Dual-Reality Horror

Bloober Team’s latest psychological-thriller The Medium launches in just a few days. The team originally announced The Medium in May 2020 during the Xbox Games Showcase. Since, we have had countless trailers and lots of information thrown our way. Fortunately, we’re here with our The Medium Preview to break down everything you need to know before it launches on 28th January.

What is The Medium?

Back in May 2020, Bloober Team announced that they were working on a new third-person psychological-horror game. They’re already successful in the genre, with previous hits including Blair Witch. In The Medium, players play as Marianne, a medium who can travel between a physical realm and a spirit realm. The gameplay seems to be split between exploring to uncover secrets whilst solving puzzles and using psychic abilities in combat. The main antagonist is The Maw – an entity born from an unspeakable tragedy.

The Medium Preview – How Are Bloober Team Using the Power of Next-Generation Consoles?

The Medium is unique thanks to its dual-reality gameplay powered by the SSD in the Series X and S. During the gameplay, the screen is split in two, with one half showing the physical realm that Marianne explores and the other half showing the spirit realm that she can enter. You can explore the two simultaneously, a concept that is sure to introduce unique challenges and puzzles unlike what we’ve seen before in the genre.

As it relies on the SSD in the new generation of consoles, The Medium is one of the first games designed solely for the new generation of consoles. It is designed to take advantage of their unique capabilities, and will of course use the power of the Series X to deliver Ray Tracing and 4K. Although these graphical enhancements will not be available on the Series S, the team have assured that the experience is equally as fantastic.

When Does The Medium Launch?

When Bloober Team announced The Medium, they planned to release it on December 10th 2020. However, due to challenges presented by Covid and Cyberpunk 2077 moving to launch on the same day, Bloober delayed the game until January 28th 2021.

What Can I Play The Medium on?

The Medium is available exclusively on the Xbox Series X, S and PC. It is not available on the Xbox One family of consoles, as it requires a high-speed SSD to render the two worlds simultaneously on screen.

How Much Will The Medium Cost?

The Medium will be available on Xbox Series X, S and PC for $49.99. You can find it on the Microsoft Store here. However, it is also included on Xbox Game Pass for the Series X|S and PC. Subscribers can play it on launch at no extra cost.

Unfortunately, there are no pre-order bonuses for Xbox players. However, those who pre-order on PC get access to the official soundtrack and The Art of The Medium Digital Artbook.
