Streets of Rage 4 Review

Streets of Rage 4 has been quite a ride. We have been waiting over 20 years for the 4th title in the series to release, and it’s on all platforms. This game has its up and downs that’s for sure. But if you have been a lifelong fan of the series or if you just enjoy combo styled beat em’ up gameplay then this game is for you.

Smashing, Punching, Kicking, your way through this side scrolling brawler doesn’t take as long as you would think. The game is fairly short. Streets of Rage 4 packs 12 levels, all ending in a boss fight. Finishing the campaign will take you about 2 to 3 hours. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. this game is actually jammed packed full of hidden bosses, combo bonuses, secrets, and even secret characters from the previous Streets of Rage games.

Choose Your Character

Streets of Rage brings back classic favorites with Axel Stone, and Blaze Fielding, as well new character’s to learn in Cherry Hunter and Floyd Iraia. And classic fan favorite character Skate is back baby! All characters have their own play style. And they’re all completely different from one another. Each has their own special moves and star moves. These different attacks do loads of damage to the enemy while depleting some of your life in exchange. Don’t worry though, as you have a few seconds to do damage and replenish the life you sacrificed. It’s a risk reward system and that really pays off! Also new to gameplay is the ability to throw objects. You can then catch the weapon you threw when it bounces off the thug. The simplistic arcade brawler gameplay is fluid, stylish, rewarding and frustrating.

The Y Syndicate is at it again! The Y-Twins are taking over all that is left in the city. They’re destroying and manipulating everything in their path. It might have something to do with Mr. X. Streets of Rage 4 story is pretty bland to be honest. I was hoping for a story I could get invested in but I ended up disappointed. It felt pretty basic.

Multiplayer

Most people will enjoy smashing thugs and earning combos. But the players that understand Streets of Rage 4 know it’s about achieving that precious S Rank. You can choose to grind through the streets brawling thugs alone or you can play 4-player local multiplayer. There is also a few different game modes to play. Play-through Arcade Mode, Boss-Rush Mode, and the new Mania Mode. It also has online multiplayer although it only supports 2 player co-op. In order to unlock secret characters you must achieve S Ranks. In order to do this you must be able to create crazy combos, avoid attacks, and finish levels quickly, while saving your Star Attacks for the extra points at the end of a level.

Music

The music in Streets of Rage 4 is great! It’s fun, upbeat and exciting! The soundtrack gives you all the chip tunes you will need to bop your head to the beat as you grind through the streets. It’s no orchestra, but each level has its own beat. The soundtrack also complements the level design perfectly.
