PGA 2K21 Preview

Fans of sports games, rejoice! The approach of fall means that your favorite genre is about to have it’s time in the spotlight. Leading the charge in 2020 will be PGA 2K21, a re-branded and bigger version of The Golf Club series by HB Studios.

Since the first The Golf Club game in 2014, HB Studios has defined its series by making it a clear alternative to the now cancelled Tiger Woods/Rory McIlroy series from EA Sports. You won’t find any battleships here. Nor will you find the arcade-like ball spin and power-ups that were part of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour experience. Instead, you will jump into a simulation experience that rewards smart play and can feel incredibly punishing when mistakes are made.

What Can We Expect From Gameplay?

HB Studios has tuned and improved gameplay throughout The Golf Club series, and there’s no reason to believe that won’t continue with the release of PGA 2K21. In fact, they have detailed a few ways that PGA 2K21 will offer a simulation experience:

  • Tempo – The rhythm of your swing will have an increasing effect on results. If your downswing is just a little bit fast, it won’t be as noticeable. However, a severe miss in tempo could cause you to end up taking your next shot from the deep rough.
  • Lie Matters – The slope that your ball sits on will have a greater effect on your shot in PGA 2K21 than in past The Golf Club games. You will need to adjust for not only left and right slope, but for an uphill or downhill lie as well. In addition, lies in the rough and sand will have a significant effect on shot power.
  • Shot Shaping – Gone is the punch shot. Now, you will need to manually adjust the angle your strike the ball at to get that effect. You will also need to manually adjust draw and fade, as well as club angle to create spin. This can all be done in the pre-shot options, which are brought up using the left bumper.
  • Shot Power – Manipulate distance and dominate by using the cursor to adjust desired distance and executing with the shot power meter on the bottom of the screen.

OK, But Does It Actually Have Real Courses?

If you’re a fan of golf games, you remember the huge disappointment when Rory McIlroy PGA Tour released with a paltry eight licensed courses. Good news – PGA 2K21 is releasing with 15 licensed courses! Players will also be able to experience the thousands of courses created by the community if they so choose.

At launch, the following licensed courses are included in PGA 2K21:

  • Atlantic Beach Country Club
  • Copperhead Course
  • East Lake Golf Club
  • Quail Hollow Club
  • Riviera Country Club
  • TPC Boston
  • TPC Deere Run
  • TPC Louisiana
  • TPC River Highlands
  • TPC San Antonio
  • TPC Sawgrass
  • TPC Scottsdale
  • TPC Southwind
  • TPC Summerlin
  • TPC Twin Cities

What’s Career Mode Like?

You’ll start out by creating your MyPlayer, a staple in 2K sports games. As a tour pro, you’ll compete against 12 licensed professional golfers, including Bryson DeChambeau and other top golfers. Start out by qualifying for the tour, and then take on the best in the world. Unfortunately, none of the PGA Tour pros are playable – you will only play using your MyPlayer.

As you progress through your career, you’ll be able to form rivalries with some of the best players in the world. Rivalries are a fun bit of competition on the side while playing through the 30 event season.

As with other 2K sports titles, MyPlayer is the centerpiece of the experience. As you play and win, you’ll earn and unlock new equipment and clothing to customize your pro into exactly what you want him or her to be – from both a style and competitive standpoint. Virtual Currency is also earned by competing, though it doesn’t seem to effect the experience in career mode all that much.

Is There Online Play?

One of the greatest disappointments of EA’s Rory McIlroy PGA Tour effort was the downright paltry multiplayer suite. Though PGA Tour 2K21‘s online play has not been fully revealed and discussed yet, if it builds off of The Golf Club 2019 it will leave players in a much happier place.

Look for modes including simultaneous stroke play, four-ball, best ball, skins, and my personal favorite, alternate shot. Here’s hoping that HB Studios unveils a deep ranking mode and some exciting MyPlayer rewards for sinking our teeth into PGA 2K21‘s multiplayer mode.
