Our Predictions For The Game Awards 2020

It’s that time of year again – snow is falling, temperatures are sort of falling, and the best video games of the year are being celebrated. The Game Awards 2020 takes place on Thursday, December 10 and will be live streamed yet again. Geoff Keighley once again will host the event, and we expect to see a lot of surprise game premieres as well as the awards themselves.

Who’s going to take home the hardware in 2020? Since it got pushed back to December 10, Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t eligible for this year’s awards. There’s lots of other amazing games from this year though. Our staff took aim at some predictions for the winners, and here’s what we think will happen:

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is the return of a beloved classic series that has not been able to reach the quality of the originals for years. Time to go back to basics!” – Kyle I

“I’m a football fan so FIFA always stands out, but considering they haven’t really made any changes, and a piece of my childhood was returned to the forefront, Tony Hawk gets the vote for me. I love playing the Pro Skater games and being able to enjoy them in current gen graphics is an immediate up for me.” – Max E

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 was able to recapture the original game’s charm and atmosphere complete with the original licensed soundtrack. Fans have been recreating their goals of hitting a 900 in HD with new easter eggs to discover.” – Daniel G

FIFA 21 captures a lot of the elements of a career mode that fans of Madden and NHL 21 are still begging for. NBA 22K1 is great, but I think FIFA 21 offers a better overall experience. Still, why no love for MLB the Show here?” – Tyler E

“It has to be Final Fantasy VII Remake. This is pretty much no contest as I don’t think any other game in the category comes close.” – Peter G

“Diving deep into the human psyche with an in-depth battle system, Persona 5 Royal gives you characters that you grow alongside and learn to love while living the everyday life of a high school student. Definitely my pick” – Daniel G

“Not sure what else can be said here, Final Fantasy is one of the best RPG series ever and the remake of VII is so good. Bringing the brilliance of the PS1 title to current gen was a fantastic step and made for easily the best RPG experience of 2020.” – Max E

“Even though this is technically an updated version of a prior release, Persona 5 Royal improves on its base game in every way. Even though there isn’t a huge amount of content added into Royal, the already incredible package of Persona 5 just makes Royal a sweet cherry on top.” – Kyle I

“Everything that was great about Persona 5 was improved even more in Persona 5 Royal. It added a new dungeon, a new semester, a new hangout spot, and an awesome new character.” – Steven W

“Is there a game on this list that better exemplifies action than DOOM? I didn’t think so. DOOM Eternal took the already fast paced action of DOOM 2016 and amped it to 11.” – Kyle I

DOOM Eternal was mental, from an action standpoint the DOOM franchise is a stalwart and the latest entry was the next to step up and smash it right out of the park.” – Max E

Steven W, EditorOri and the Will of the Wisps
Tyler E, EditorOri and the Will of the Wisps

The Last of Us Part II is both beautiful and harrowing at every turn. Naughty Dog has created the penultimate setting for an even darker story.” – Erik M

“To me, it’s between Ghost of Tsushima and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. I really can’t decide between the two. Ghost of Tsushima is probably the more ambitious of the two with a really stylized yet realistic look for 13th Century Japan, but Ori’s art style is so beautiful. I genuinely can’t decide.” – Peter G

Ori and the Will of the Wisps takes an open-world platformer and adds a style that takes players on a truly mesmerizing experience. From lush forests to blazing deserts, Ori and the Will of the Wisps captures every detail with amazing use of colors and lighting.” – Daniel G
