Nominations for The Game Awards 2020 announced

The Game Awards is a ceremony that has been celebrated for a long while now. Thankfully this year is no exception as it is pretty good to see something not get cancelled.

Good ol’ Geoff Keighley livestreamed the nominations at 1pm EST and there’s quite a lot to say and discuss. Lets not waste any more time, let’s discuss the list of nominations for some of the categories, shall we?

Game of the Year

The nominees for Game of the Year were as follows:

Animal Crossing: New Horizons
-DOOM Eternal
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Ghost of Tsushima
-Hades
The Last of Us: Part II

Pretty expected list to be honest. Half-Life Alyx got noticeably shafted in this category. This was a surprise as Half-Life Alyx was loved by everybody and was considered the Playstation VR’s killer app. As for who would win? It’s a bit of a toss-up since all those games are very beloved. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Best Game Direction

The nominees for Best Game Direction were as follows:

Final Fantasy VII Remake
-Ghost of Tsushima
Hades
Half-Life: Alyx
-The Last of Us: Part II

Hades getting nominated for this category was something that caught me by surprise. Not that it doesn’t deserve it, it’s just something that surprised me. The Last of Us: Part II nominated for this category in particular can be quite the topic of discussion among people and it already is on social media.

Best Narrative

The nominees for Best Narrative were as follows:

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
Final Fantasy VII Remake
-Ghost of Tsushima
Hades
-The Last of Us: Part II

Admittedly, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a game I’ve never heard off so I can’t speak of it’s quality. Final Fantasy VII Remake and Hades getting nominated were surprising in all the right ways, however. It does look like a really tight race in this category.

Best Score/Music

The nominees for Best Score/Music were as follows:

-DOOM Eternal
-Final Fantasy VII Remake
-Hades
-Ori & The Will of the Wisps
-The Last of Us: Part II

Very solid line-up for the nominations. Final Fantasy VII Remake in particular seems to be the front runner but Ori’s soundtrack is not too far behind either. Really close race for this award since every soundtrack is awesome.

Best Action Game

The nominees for Best Action Game are as follows:

-DOOM Eternal
-Hades
-Half-Life: Alyx

Nioh 2
-Streets of Rage 4

All are good pics, though Nioh 2 is classified under RPG as well. It’s kinda in the same vain Nier: Automata was in: more Action than RPG. I think DOOM Eternal is going to win this category, but Hades also has a chance to win as well.

Best Action-Adventure Game

The nominees for Best Action-Adventure as as listed:

-Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
-Ghost of Tsushima
-Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Ori & The Will of the Wisps
-Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order

The Last of Us: Part II

Pretty beefy list of games for this one. Jedi Fallen Order came out last year, but not in time for the nominations so it missed out (Cyberpunk 2077 will be getting the same treatment as well). I feel like the competition is going to be between Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us: Part II.

The Game Awards being a thing gives us something to look forward to in this messy and somber year. It’s not the same as they usually are but it’s a whole lot better then nothing. Here is the site for The Game Awards to see the whole list of categories and nominees.

What do you guys think? Were they a good list? Could there have been done more? Let us know in the comments below.
