Treyarch finally unveiled the new chapter of the Call of Duty Zombies experience included in Black Ops Cold War. The new chapter, called Die Maschine, features a new story, new characters and lots of new features. Here’s everything we learned in the Black Ops Cold War Zombies reveal.
In the announcement video posted on Youtube, the team talked us through their vision for the new zombies experience. They seemed to focus on one core principal: elevating the zombies experience. It seems to be bigger, and hopefully better, than anything that’s come before.
In Cold War Zombies, you play as Requiem Response Team. This is a squad sent into a bunker filled with secrets linked to the zombies ravaging the world. However, you aren’t the only characters looking for answers. You are at odds with Omega Group, a Soviet team deployed to uncover those same secrets. The development team didn’t go into any more detail on this ‘Omega Group’, but it’s likely they’ll form a part of the story and Easter Egg for the first map.
So there’ll be new characters and a new storyline to follow. There also plenty of new features to amplify the zombies experience. The team briefly touched on an ‘innovative new intel system’ that’ll make content available ‘on demand, anytime’. This was extremely vague. It seems linked into how the story is told – maybe we’ll pick up intel similar to the campaign that’ll reveal more about the story? It’s not clear, but we don’t have much longer to wait. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is launching November 13th, and zombies will be a part of that experience at launch. This is a noteworthy statement, as rumours suggested zombies could come in a future update. They also showed brief glimpses at new zombie types.
This intel system isn’t the only new feature. The team also revealed lots of other exciting details. Cold War Zombies will link into progression across the Cold War experience – guns levelled up in Zombies will also level up in Multiplayer for example. This is important, as you’ll be able to start a Zombies game using these guns. Treyarch are introducing the option to start the match with your own Gunsmith-crafted weapon from loadouts. This means you can wave goodbye to using a pistol in those early rounds, and start with whatever gun you want. Weapons will also have a rarity. The higher the rarity, the greater the damage output and attachments for the weapon. This means any gun is a viable way to survive later rounds.
This isn’t all though. Players will have a Lethal, tactical and support slot. They can find equipment around the map, or craft it using things you find. Lethal and tactical equipment include grenades and stun grenades, similar to multiplayer. The support slot allows players to use high-powered weaponry, as well as the scorestreaks that they’ve unlocked by levelling up. The trailer shows some of these in action, with a sentry gun ripping through a horde of zombies, and a chopper gunner wreaking havoc on the undead hordes.
There’s also a new exfil system which massively alters the zombies experience. Death is no longer the only way out. In Cold War Zombies, players can call in a chopper to exfiltrate from the map. If they choose to do so, they will receive extra rewards and bonuses. This significantly increases the challenge however, so prepare to survive a few rounds of zombies ‘dialed up to 11’ before you can safely escape.
This is an exciting new Zombies experience, but that doesn’t mean it’s all new. There’s lots to look forward to for returning fans. The gameplay is largely the same. Expect round-based chaos, power-ups, pack-a-punch, the mystery box and those classic perks we all know and love – including Juggernog and Speed Cola. Players can also look forward to classic weapons like the Ray Gun, and even a classic location, Nacht der Untoten, which is a section in the first Cold War map.
The team also hinted at the return of some classic characters, adding that the old story has been ‘put to rest’, but ‘some things don’t want to stay dead’. It seems likely that we’ll see some fan-favourite characters return throughout this story. In fact, they’ve already hinted at a mysterious character named Sam, a name that is sure to ring a bell for any Zombies fan. Samantha was a young girl who was integral to the original Zombies story, and I doubt the team would use that name again without good reason. Sam could be linked to this classic character.
Of course, Zombies traditionally tells its story over multiple maps, and Cold War Zombies will be no different. Okay, there is one big difference. All those new post-launch maps will be free for all players! That means everyone can enjoy the zombies experience together without DLC separating them. Cold War Zombies will also tie into the Battle Pass, meaning you can progress through the pass by playing Zombies, multiplayer or Warzone.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches on all systems on November 13th. Some of you might be upgrading to the next-generation of consoles, some of you might not. It doesn’t matter, as all players can play together. Black Ops Cold War Zombies will feature cross-play and cross-generation gameplay, meaning everyone can play together, no matter which system you’re on.
